Capabilities

Performance envelope

Gland packing remains the workhorse seal for valve stems and general-service pumps, and the braid you choose decides how long the gland goes between adjustments. SealGuard packings are densely braided from high-grade yarns with the right lubricant and corner reinforcement for the duty — low-friction PTFE for chemicals, flexible graphite for high-temperature steam, tough aramid for abrasive slurry. The result is controlled leakage, lower stem friction and far fewer trips to the gland follower.

  • Note 01

    Match packing cross-section to the stuffing-box depth and fit a full ring count for even compression.

  • Note 02

    Choose flexible graphite for high-temperature steam and heat-transfer service where PTFE softens.

  • Note 03

    Use aramid corners or rings to resist extrusion in abrasive slurry and high-pressure pump duties.

  • Note 04

    Allow a controlled drip on rotary pumps — over-tightening burns the packing and scores the shaft.

From six-week pump failures to a year between interventions

Challenge

An aggressive acid-transfer service was destroying pump seals roughly every six weeks. Each failure meant an emergency strip-down, lost batch time and a growing reliability backlog across a bank of duty/standby pumps.

Solution

We replaced the component seals with balanced cartridge mechanical seals running silicon-carbide faces and PTFE-encapsulated secondary seals, plus a flush plan matched to the duty. The cartridge format removed setting error on rebuild and gave the technicians a repeatable installation.

Result

Mean time between failures moved from six weeks to over twelve months on the lead pumps, and mean time to repair dropped because the cartridge drops straight in. The site redeployed the maintenance hours it used to spend rebuilding seals.
