Reading the envelope
Each family below spans a wide range of constructions; the figures show the broad envelope the family can reach, not what a single part does at once. A material rarely delivers its maximum temperature and maximum pressure simultaneously — as temperature rises, allowable load usually falls. Always size against your worst-case point, then confirm on the specific datasheet.
Pressure-temperature interaction
For bolted gaskets, available seating stress drops as the joint heats and the bolts relax, so high-temperature joints need creep-resistant constructions and, often, live-loaded bolting. For dynamic seals, both speed and pressure generate heat at the interface, so the practical pressure limit falls as shaft speed rises. Plan for these interactions rather than reading the two maxima independently.
